On Thursday 5 January, the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) announced that it has published a report titled Accelerating the transition from fossil fuels and securing energy supplies, setting out how the UK can accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and secure energy supplies. Through the report, the EAC is calling for a national mobilisation, or ‘war effort’, on energy efficiency; for a greater focus on the potential of onshore wind and tidal energy; and for the government to set a clear date for ending new oil and gas licensing rounds. It is also calling for faster action from the oil and gas sector to reduce its operational emissions produced during oil and gas extraction.
