On Tuesday 16 May, Ofgem published an open letter on future reform to the electricity connections process. This follows a recognition that there is a pressing need to prepare the energy system for a significant increase in nuclear power, offshore wind, and solar power generation capacity which will be needed to meet decarbonisation goals and growing electricity demand. To highlight the necessity of rapidly improving the current network infrastructure to handle new connections, the regulator notes that over 40% of new generation capacity holding transmission connection agreements have connection dates of 2030 or later. In the letter, Ofgem sets out what challenges the energy system faces; what is needed to tackle these challenges; how the regulator is delivering this; and what can be expected from Ofgem, government, and industry, including a joint connections action plan due for publication later in the summer to provide clarity and direction on the key reforms and the way forward. Ofgem is seeking views from stakeholders on the proposals set out by 16 June 2023.
